When To Take Prenatal Vitamins - August 4th, 2010

You’ve just discovered you’re pregnant, and you are now trying to figure out all of the details. It’s immediately time to start taking care of yourself. Whether you are 3 weeks or 3 months along, the earlier you start taking prenatal vitamins, the better. Ideally, they should actually be taken for at least 6 months before conception even occurs. Most healthcare professionals would say that all women of this age who are sexually active should be taking prenatal vitamins. Why?

Because the proper use of prenatal vitamins can help you to avoid many all too common birth defects in infants. By supplementing the body with things like folic acid, it can prevent birth defects like spina bifida and cleft palate if taken early enough, namely, within the first few weeks of pregnancy. The neural tubes will fuse within the 5th week, and folic acid found in prenatal vitamins will be helpful in allowing you to improve this development.

Even for women of reproductive age who are not sexually active, prenatal vitamins can help to vastly improve the hair, skin, and nails. It can help you to significantly improve the way your body appears and looks. It can help you to improve total body function. There are many different types of prenatal vitamins, and there are many different benefits thereof. But it is important that when pregnant, you start using a good prenatal vitamin as soon as possible to prevent birth defects and improve and ensure the health of the baby.

Are Multivitamins Healthy? - September 24th, 2009

We’ve been taught all our lives that vitamins are good for us; that they are necessary to stay healthy and live longer.  I remember when I was younger my mom making us all take those fruity flavored Fred Flintstone vitamins.  Now days it’s a lot more complicated.  A lot more complicated!!  Now there are multivitamins and megavitamins, supplements and antioxidants.  There are countless vitamins garnered toward every kind of consumer from the pregnant to the elderly, children, men, women, diabetics and so on.

There are those that say vitamins are necessary to stave off infections and even prevent diseases.  Then there are those that say vitamins, namely the overuse of vitamins, have had negative impacts on consumers and that they can even weaken our immune system.   One thing both sides drive home is the importance of seeking a doctor’s advice before you begin any type of serious vitamin regime.  Certain vitamins taken by certain individuals can cause deficiencies and if it is left untreated, it can even be fatal.  Of course, those cases are extremely rare but you can never be too careful with your health.  So if you are looking for the best multivitamins, do your research, ask around and please ask a professional.

Vitamins - August 4th, 2009

Vitamins are often discussed and recognized, and yet they are one of the most misunderstood elements in society.  We know that we have to have them to prevent serious diseases such as scurvy, rickets, beri beri, pellagra, and birth defects among other things.  But we don’t seem to see the importance at the same time.  We don’t eat balanced diets, even though we know the best sources of vitamins are whole foods rather than the multivitamins we buy at the grocery store.

They should be used to supplement, not make up for a completely deficient diet.  They also tend to be packed with fibers in the cases of the right fruits and vegetables as you may know.  Essentially speaking, vitamins affect every part of our lives.  Everything should be used in moderation considering the fact that you can overdose on vitamins.  But at the same point, this should not turn you away from vitamins, you just have to remember to get the right balance, and it’s really hard to do it with just foods anyway.  You just have to remember everything, and frankly if you are eating a healthy and balanced diet, you shouldn’t really have to worry about it.  You can get rid of acne, raise energy levels, and basically achieve a body you never knew was there if you are eating this way.
